"The Murals of San Bartolo, Guatemala: Early Maya Creation Mythology and the Origins of Gods and Kings"
Karl A. Taube
Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Riverside
February 22, 2008 7:30 p.m. Barrick Museum Auditorium
Co-Sponsored by the Braunstein Foundation and the Department of Art, Institute for Latin American Studies, UNLV
The recently discovered of murals at San Bartolo constitutes one of the more important discoveries in the Maya area in recent years. These murals are not only the earliest known for the region, but their elegant style and delicate line quality have earned them the nickname the "Sistine Chapel" of the Maya region by National Geographic writers. The entire mural program appears to have been painted at one period providing a unique glimpse at the range of specific artistic conventions in the Peten during this period of time. Among the motifs appearing in the murals are portrayals of breath, blood, and specific supernatural beings, including the maize god, who has a central role in not only Maya creation mythology but the origins of Maya kingship. These murals represent one of the most important archaeological discoveries in recent years, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the artistic representations of Maya creation rituals.
